Bula friends!
It is my 2nd week and all is going well in Fiji. We have been spending a little over the past week on the University of South Pacific in Suva, Fiji and striking up conversations with students to share the Gospel. It's been really interesting to see how receptive the Fijians are by way of their culture. They are so friendly and don't really tell strangers "no" when we ask if we can sit down and talk... sooo we use that to our advantage! :) Within the first TWO days 38 students prayed to receive Christ. We are no close to 200 students who have indicated prayer to have a personal relationship with Jesus. We do follow up with these students so that we can help them figure out how exactly they go about starting that relationship. A lot of students don't show up but it is still encouraging to see the amount that do. Please be praying that these students will continue to be receptive and sincere with their prayers!
At the University of South Pacific they have an organization called Student Life which is essentially Campus Crusades for Christ in Fiji. It's awesome to see how this has taken off and the numbers of the students that are a part of it. We got to attend their meeting last Thursday night and see how they praise the Lord! They are doing great things on their campus. Unfortunately, this is our last week so we don't get to spend much more time on campus. HOWEVER, we will be going to another university, FNU, and LAUNCHING a Student Life movement on their campus!!! So please be praying that God will totally take care of this and provide us with willing hearts and minds to get this going. Supa cool my friends.
Fun Facts about Fijians:
They don't refrigerate milk. (I'm struggling a bit with the food... already been to Mcdonalds)
McDonalds is like a high class restaurant here. It's like $15 for a meal.
Detergent is like $70. I will never again complain about the price of detergent.
Their steering wheel is on the right side of the vehicle
They raise their eyebrows to indicate agreement (we nod)
They have like 70 different "Fijian" languages (the 3 girls I had spoken with couldn't understand each others "home" languages which was weird because they're all friends)
The toilets flush in the opposite direction.
You don't look elders in the eye. It's incredibly disrespectful. I forgot and stared at an Indian woman.....awkward....
When they offer you something, you should take it. Two men offered me a seat and I forgot and didn't sit down....also awkward...
The men wear skirts!! Sulus actually. It's like business attire. I wish men in America did his :)
The buses here are like the bus on Harry Potter (the night bus) but they play music. A girl described it as a "moving night club" today!
The taxi rides are like you are literally in a game of Mario Kart... quite scary
I came across this in my quiet time last night....
"Listen to me, you islands;
hear this, you distant nations:
Before I was born the Lord called me;
from my birth he made mention of my name."
Isaiah 49:1
GOD'S DOING CRAZY GOOD THINGS IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC.
Much love,
Linds
Let your light so shine before men,
That they may see your good works
And glorify your Father in heaven.
That they may see your good works
And glorify your Father in heaven.
